Join Ian Evans, past President of Pittsburgh Bonsai Society and founder of Bebop Bonsai, for fun and informative hands-on sessions where you will explore the history, beauty, and techniques behind this both tranquil and powerful art form.

Ian Evans is a lifelong artist and experienced teacher who has worked with Phipps Conservatory and presented for universities and garden clubs.​

His work is grounded in proven bonsai technique and guided by an intuitive artistic sensibility, helping students care for their trees and confidently grow their own collections.

Bonsai Foundations
Season 1
Winter / Early Spring
1/31-4/18
Foundational bonsai principles, history, species, & styles.
Focus on soil, tools, watering, repotting, & early spring preparation to support healthy growth.
Season 2
Spring / Summer
4/25-7/11
Active growing season instruction covering pruning, fertilization, heat management, display, refinement, and ongoing care during peak growth.

Season 3
Late Summer / Autumn
7/18-10/3
Advanced seasonal work including vessels and slabs, fall physiology, spruce bonsai, and preparing trees for cooler weather and dormancy.
Season 4
Winter Preparation Intensive
10/10-10/24
A focused intensive on winter protection, watering, wire removal, frost management, and planning early spring work for outdoor bonsai.
